An Analysis of the Kite Image in The Kite Runner
Abstract:The Kite Runner, as Khaled Hosseini’s first novel, has won a good reputation since it’s publication. The paper mainly emphasizes the kite image that carries rich symbolic meanings throughout the whole text. The analysis shows that the kite symbolizes different things to different characters, revealing the deep theme of the novel to the reader.
The kite, as a cultural symbol, represents a spirit of bravery in the tradition of Afghanistan, and it represents a key to open Amir’s father’s heart. Furthermore, the kite image implies a complicated friendship between Amir and Hassan. For Hassan, it symbolizes loyalty—“For you, a thousand times over.” while for Amir, it symbolizes betrayal and cowardice. Lastly, as the clue through the whole novel, the kite witnesses the protagonist’s journey to redemption. The process of running for the kite is the process of chasing ideal, paying redemption and enhancing his spiritual realm. It reveals a truth to the reader that it is not horrible to make mistakes in a person’s life; however, once make any, the only thing he should do is face up to himself and “run for the kite” in his heart without hesitation.
