On Chinglish in Chinese-English Translation

I. Introduction

The phenomenon of Chinglish has existed for a long time. In its early history, Chinglish was considered as an incorrect, sometimes even ridiculous English pattern spoken or written by Chinese people, which has been a laughing stock to foreigners. With the arrival of the globalization and the increasing importance role of China in the whole world, people of other races gradually have a better understanding of China. Meanwhile, Chinese people also begin to broaden their horizon to reach the outside world. Consequently, foreigners become more tolerant towards Chinglish as long as the grammatical mistakes do not go too far to understand. In this case, Chinglish may be categorized into China English without a definite boundary between the two. Instead of taking too much trouble in defining Chinglish or China English, it is better to focus on their common unique features, just as Xie Zhijun claims:“As the same as other theoretical studies, China English studies should not start with definitions, but problems” (Xie 10). This view of putting an emphasis on “problems” also applies to Chinglish studies. However, it is Chinglish that can best reflect “problems” when English is used in China, so the study of Chinglish phenomenon is typical to sketch a clear picture of the characteristics and the problems of Chinese learning English people. With the idea of Chinglish as incorrect expressions, interlanguage or learners language in mind, Scholars tend to do academic researches concerning descriptions of Chinglish on various levels of language, mostly on lexical level, sentence structure and so on. Few of previous researches have digged into the causes of Chinglish. This thesis will describe the manifestations and causes of Chinglish in Chinese-English translation, and put forward some implications avoid Chinglish in Chinese-English translation at last.
