摘 要:中英饮食文化研究的热潮开始于20世纪50年代,取得了许多优秀的研究成果。本文运用文献研究法,历史分析法和对比研究法来研究中英饮食文化的起源及内涵并探讨了中国菜名翻译方面的问题,意在增强中英两国人民的跨国际意识和使中国菜名的翻译更加现代化和国际化。本文旨在加大中英两国人民之间的互相了解和友好往来,有望为中国人民形成更加健康合理的饮食结构和使中国饮食文化走向全世界提出可行性建议。

Abstract:The upsurge of research on Chinese and Great Britain’s food culture began in 1950s. Many excellent research results have been obtained. This paper uses the literature research method, historical analysis method and comparative study method to explore the origins of Chinese and Great Britain’s diet culture as well as the connotation  of diet culture and discuss some aspects of translation. It can promote the international awareness of Chinese people and Great Britain’s people and make the translation of Chinese food name more modern and international. This paper will help to enhance the mutual understanding and friendly exchanges between the people of China and Great Britain. It will give feasible suggestions for Chinese people to form a more healthy and reasonable diet structure and for the Chinese diet culture to go into the world.

On Cultural Connotation Of Diet and Translation Of Food In China and Great Britain

I. Introduction

    Diet is a daily activity for human being. Diet culture is an essential part of human civilization. Chinese people’s diet culture, with a long history, is an important part of Chinese culture, which has been a window for foreign people to know about China, so it is with British diet culture. For Chinese diet, it went through from uncooked food to cooked food. The discovery and invention of fire means a lot to Chinese diet. It spawned the primitive cooking and laid a foundation for the development of Chinese diet. Chinese people’s physical quality and intelligence had been improved a lot due to the use of cooked food. There are great differences in food kind, production, process, desk manner, appliance, ceremony between Chinese diet and British diet due to the geographical differences and the different courses of history. Knowing about the diet culture of the two nations is a crucial factor for the friendly intercourse. For example, a lot of awkwardness and misunderstanding can be avoided if people know about desk manner, the translation of food name between the two nations. A lot of principles, methods, and techniques which involves translation of food name between the two countries will be discussed. Principles: avoid cultural conflicts, avoid illusion and emphasize reality etc.; methods: literal translation, free translation etc.; techniques: transportation and adaption and so on. This paper will start from the origins of the diet of China and Great Britain. A further study will be made in terms of the connotation of the diet culture as well as its differences, based on which problems correlating to the translation of food name will be discussed. With the development of modern technology, the world is becoming one community. It is necessary for people to know about other countries’ cultures. So this paper has great significance in the international communication among nations.
