An Analysis of Chinese Male Images in American Hollywood Movies
I. Introduction
In recently years, the image of Chinese males has been regarded as upright, brave and full of wisdom, but the image was not so positive from the beginning. In early Hollywood movies, Chinese males were usually considered as the ugly and evil Yellow-race intruders and its representative image was the disgusting Fu Manchu who was extremely duplicitous and full of cunning tricks. During World War II, Western countries, especially America began to observe China from a new perspective. Hence, images of peasant Wang Long with diligent and simple character and Bruce Lee who showed Chinese Kung Fu incisively and vividly appeared. Nevertheless, the Chinese male images did not become gracious even after the heroic image of Bruce Lee. Many Chinese experts and scholars existed in the Hollywood movies only as supporting actors, such as Jet Li, Donnie Yen, so the Chinese male images that they played were at the edge position. These movies were at transitional stage. With the development of China and its frequent cultural exchanges with Western countries, the Chinese male images in the Hollywood movies have gradually transformed to braveness, integrity and wit magnanimity. There are some Chinese male heroic images such as Jack Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen in a series of Hollywood films.
Many scholars conducted studies on the Chinese male images in Hollywood movies. Li Yun published a book named The Chinese image of the Hollywood film under the historical perspective in 2013. He made an analysis on how Chinese male image changed along with history(13). Li Xi and Lin Kang compiled a book called The Demonized China, in which they dissected the fact that Chinese males was demonized and why they were insidious in early Hollywood movies(29). However, these studies are not comprehensive enough.
