摘 要：美国好莱坞电影在世界电影史上占据了重要的地位,它对一个国家的整体形象及其国民形象的塑造和传播起着重要的作用。本文以美国好莱坞电影中的中国人物形象为切入点,分析好莱坞电影中消极的中国人物形象以及20世纪90年代以后积极的中国人物形象,并分析了出现这种变化的原因。本文旨在加深世界对中国的了解,这对好莱坞电影塑造积极正面的中国银幕形象和改善中国人物形象具有重要的意义。

Abstract：The American Hollywood film occupies an important position in the history of the world film, it has an important role in shaping and spreading of the country’s overall and national image. This paper based on the Chinese images in the Hollywood films as a breakthrough point, analyzes the negative images of Chinese characters in Hollywood films and the positive images of Chinese characters after 1990s, and then analyzes the reasons for this change. The purpose of this paper is to deepen the understanding of the China to the world, which is of great significance to the Hollywood films to create a positive screen image of China and to improve the image of Chinese characters.

The Analysis of Chinese Images in Hollywood Films

I. Introduction

Shaping the image of the Chinese people in western countries has a long history, from the description of the wonderful travel notes to numerous literary works, and from a variety of newspapers and magazines to news reports and so on. They are the places where western countries shape the image of the Chinese people. In 1896, the film was born. For more than 100 years, it has entered into the shape and spread of the image of the Chinese people with a more influential attitude. Film was born in France, but now when people talk about the movie, they refer to Hollywood. Hollywood's influence is undoubtedly enormous. It has abundant human and financial resources in movie shooting technology. Coupled with strength of many star to join, Hollywood film holds a large share in the global market. Movies, especially Hollywood movies, have become a world language. It can be said that Hollywood is not only a representative of the American film industry, which is also quite representative of the global film industry. This is the reason why the author chose the Hollywood film as the research object.

This thesis aims to study the Chinese characters in Hollywood films, and to understand the western world's view on China by studying the American Hollywood movies. This study also hopes to make people understand these issues, and these problems has great significance to the Chinese film to create a positive image of China screen, improve the image of Chinese characters and participate in the construction of national soft power. At the same time, the study of Chinese characters in Hollywood movies has a certain reference function for the Chinese media to shape the image of Chinese characters, and the author hopes that this research can play a positive role in promoting China's status.

For a long time, the domestic scholars’ studies on the image of Chinese characters in Hollywood films were few. But from the beginning of this century, the domestic scholars have given more attention to the subject of “the image of China in western literary works”. Then this new subject began to enter people's research field, and most of them are mainly to study the famous Chinese writer’s literary works. Therefore, the image of Chinese characters in the film also began to receive the attention of the West. Such as, Fang Yiling briefly analyzed the overall image of Chinese in the Hollywood film. Liu Kelan was concerned about the changes in the image of Chinese in different historical periods. Different periods of Chinese characters in Hollywood movies have different characteristics. But generally speaking, it can be pided into two stages, that is, the negative image and the positive image of the stage, this paper will study from these two stages.
