Jane Austen is a famous British female novelist. Her works popularly focus on the marriage life of female in squire family. She uses unique female observation to depicts many vivid characters and draw a real picture of the world around her. Jane Austen lived during the period of Britain’s Industrial Revolution which was not only the flourishing Period of the industrial bourgeoisie but also an era of social transition. Her novels, such as a popular anti-traditional romance novel or a 18th century Gothic fiction, focused on describing the daily life of the middle class and the performance of social values from trivial matters. Austen created 6 novels during her career as a writer, most of her novels were about the British decent people’s marriage at that time. Also, these novels emerged personality, and independent thinking of the new women. When reading Austen’s novels, it is not difficult to find that she projects her shadows on characters and events and some circumstances were happened in Jane’s own family. She gave the heroine wisdom, thought and dignity. We can believe that was the desire of the author and other women in that era.
Austen’s works attract many comments. Some are praise, some are critical. Her work didn’t sell well when they were published. However, with the time going on, Austen become more and more important in English literary history. She broke the situation of man’s dominating in literary creation in a long period. Thomas Babington Macaulay in A History of England said that: “Shakespeare has had neither equal nor second. But among the writers who, in the point which we have noticed, have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen, a woman of whom England is justly proud.”(73)He gave Austen a great evaluation. Another praise was from Alfred Tennyson, who wrote “¬Miss Austen understood the smallness of life to perfection. She was a great artist, equal her small sphere to Shakespeare. ” (201)in his work In Memoriam. Still there were many writers highly appreciating Austen, such as Walter Scott, Troy Rop, George Eliot, Coleridge and Mrs. Browning. Of course, there were also some critics disliking Austen, such as Charlotte Bronte and Mark Twain. There is a reason that causes Austen couldn’t be loved during the period which man dominating everything, she is a female writer.
