The Application of the Schema Theory to English Reading Teaching in Senior High School

Abstract:Reading teaching is always the emphasis and difficulty of English teaching in senior high school. Researchers of traditional teaching methods think that reading is a passive process to decode from upside to downside, and people have to understand it word by word so that they can get the whole text. According to schema theory, schematic coordination procedure in every layer is included in the reading. It is not only to decode but also a interaction between information input and readers. Therefore, schema theory is adopted as the base to expound how it can be applied in English reading teaching. Further more, students will be familiar with all kinds of English literary forms with different diagrams, and they will be easier to get the structure and details of the text as well, so it will increase their interests and improve their reading ability.

The Application of Schema Theory in English Reading Teaching in Senior High School
I. Introduction
Most learners, teachers as well as researchers have come to the agreement that English reading is essential to foreign language learning and teaching, without which, none of the five skills (1istening, speaking, reading, writing and translating) can be learned well. The English reading plays very important roles in English teaching and learning. On the one hand, students need to know the skills of reading. On the other hand, the problems may exist in our reading teaching. How to organize reading teaching in class and help students to develop their reading skill and ability are the problems we cannot neglect.
The schema theory is based on the notion that people’s past experience lead to recall the mental frameworks which help students make sense of new knowledge. In the world, every person has a unique past experience, and it needs to restore and coordinate when he or she reads text. The stored knowledge along with people is called schema. Through schema theory can improve student’s reading ability and stimulate them to recall the prior knowledge, it also makes English reading become more efficient. Thus, this study aims at conducting a research on the senior high school students’ reading beliefs and reading strategies, what’s more investigating the current situations of reading teaching. Based on the analysis of the existing problems and the schema theory, the application of schema theory in English reading teaching will be talked. It is hoped that the study can help highlight the importance of using reading teaching strategies and eventually put forward some pedagogic suggestions on English reading teaching in senior high school.
