On a Study of Translation Strategies of Culture-loaded Words in The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai
Abstract:Chang Hen Ge is one of Wang Anyi’s representative works. Once the English version published, it won the nomination for the Newman Prize for Modern Chinese Literature in 2009. Based on its unique background, numerous words in this work are pertinent to specific Chinese lifestyle, habits and customs. These words are known as cultural-loaded words, which are also known as culture vacancy. No counterparts of them could be found in target language to express the cultural meanings expressed in source language. Therefore, translators are always faced with huge challenge when dealing with the translation of cultural-loaded words.
It is the German scholar Friedrich Schleiermacher who first put forward “domesticating translation” and “foreignizing translation”. Later American scholar Venuti gave a detailed definition of domestication and foreignization in The Translators’ Invisibility: A History of Translation in 1995.
In this thesis, guided by domestication and foreignization, the author will pick up some culture-loaded words from Chang Hen Ge to elaborate on the specific translation strategies used by the translators. On the one hand, the author herself may have new findings. On the other hand, this study may inspire other translators, advancing the dissemination of Chinese literary works.

摘 要:《长恨歌》被认为是王安忆最具代表性作品之一,英译本一经出版,便获得2009年纽曼华语文学奖提名。基于其特殊的创作背景,该作品中许多词汇与中华民族独特的生活方式、行为习惯及社会风俗等有关,这些词被称为文化负载词。文化负载词又称为文化空缺,指的是源语言词汇所承载的文化信息在目的语中没有对应语。因而,译者在处理文化负载词的翻译时往往面临巨大挑战。
归化异化翻译策略最早由德国翻译家弗里德里希·施莱尔马赫提出。在他的理论基础上,美国学者劳伦斯·韦努蒂在其1995年出版的《译者隐身:一部翻译史》中提出了归化与异化的具体概念。
本文旨在从韦努蒂的归化异化理论出发,选取原文中部分文化负载词,分析译者在翻译过程中所具体采取的翻译方法,分析其精彩之处。通过自己的研究,更深刻体会这些英文表达的恰当之处,发现更新理论与成果,给其他译者以启迪,更好地推动中国文学作品对外传播。

Chapter One Introduction
The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai is one representative of Wang Anyi’s works. Its original version was first published in 1996 by China Writers Publishing Houses. By telling the life story of the heroin Wang Qiyao, the writer seeks to reveal the history of Shanghai, portray the women of Shanghai and present the culture of Shanghai. In 2000, Wang Anyi won Maodun Literature Award for this work. Its English version translated by Susan Chen and Michael Berry came out in 2008 by the Columbia Press. Once published, it won great acclaim from the western world and Wang Anyi won the nomination for the Newman Prize for Modern Chinese literature in 2009. Undoubtedly, this makes for the dissemination of our national culture. In order to spread our culture preciously and accurately, the translation of words or expressions with Chinese features should be considered seriously. This thesis is to investigate the translation of culture-loaded words in The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai (translated by Susan Chen and Michael Berry) and elaborate on the strategies used by the translators from the perspective of domestication and foreignization, so as to offer reasonable suggestions for the translators to deal with the translation of Chinese literature works.
