Some critics focus on the female education in Pride and Prejudice. There is a discussion in the novel about what is the definition of talented woman. From the discussion American critics David maintains that Jane Austen tends to prioritize women’s knowledge and cultural cultivation over skills like piano playing and painting to be qualified “family angle”. Elizabeth’s piano playing is in the average level. Jane Austen tries to emphasize that women can win the respect from men by their personality rather than beauty and talent. The requirement of knowledge and cultural cultivation actually is “the revaluation of female’s value standard” (David, 38).

Margret Kirkham, in her Jane Austen, Female awareness and Fiction, places the novels of Jane Austen in the context of Enlightenment feminist movement and focuses on the discussion of Jane Austen’s female awareness, such as the proper role of women and women literature.

Chinese scholars also pay great attention to this masterpiece. Zhang Jie states that Elizabeth’s female awareness is based on her self-identification of gender. Ming Jie, in her work, maintains that Elizabeth is the evidence that women can also be “the mentor of men” since she changes Darcy’s pride.
