From the discussion American critics David maintains that Jane Austen tends to prioritize women’s knowledge and cultural cultivation over skills like piano playing and painting to be qualified “family angle”. Elizabeth’s piano playing is in the average level. Jane Austen tries to emphasize that women can win the respect from men by their personality rather than beauty and talent. The requirement of knowledge and cultural cultivation actually is “the revaluation of female’s value standard” (David, 38).
Margret Kirkham, in her Jane Austen, Female awareness and Fiction, places the novels of Jane Austen in the context of Enlightenment feminist movement and focuses on the discussion of Jane Austen’s female awareness, such as the proper role of women and women literature.
