A Study of Translation Strategies in E-C Translation of Movie Subtitles
Abstract:With the acceleration of globalization, international dialogue and cross - cultural communication are becoming more and more frequent. Film translation, especially subtitle translation, has become an important cultural exchange activity. Film subtitle translation needs the transfer of meaning in language and information transmission at the cultural level. Generally speaking, there are three strategies in dealing with cross-cultural translation, namely, domestication, foreignization and deduction. The purpose of this paper is to define the relationship between domestication and foreignization in film subtitle translation under the guidance of contextual effects and cognitive effort. In the process of subtitle translation, we should adhere to the principle of optimal relevance, choose different translation strategies according to different restrictive factors, such as deduction, foreignization, domestication, etc. The paper tries to give useful suggestions and guidance for subtitle translators.

摘 要:随着全球化进程的加快,国际对话和跨文化交流日益频繁。电影翻译,特别是电影字幕翻译,成为重要的文化交流活动。电影字幕翻译需要语言层面的意义传递,还涉及文化层面的信息传输。一般来说,在处理文本中的文化因素时,有三种策略,即归化(趋向于目标文化)和异化(趋向于源文化)以及缩略。本文旨在结合关联原则的基础上重新定义电影字幕翻译过程中归化和异化之间的关系。本文从语境效果和认知努力两个方面来实现最佳关联。笔者提出在电影字幕翻译过程中应坚持最佳关联的原则,根据不同的制约因素来选择不同的翻译策略,如缩略、异化、归化以结合实例分析达到最佳翻译效果。为电影字幕翻译工作者提出可行性建议和指导。

With the growing cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, films act as one of cultural carriers. Different forms of culture, language and features can be fully reflected in the film. The film not only reflects the mainstream of contemporary society and non-mainstream cultural trends, but also reflects various groups of typical ideology of the group. Therefore, the film is one of the important ways to promote cultural integration of the world. Film subtitles are one of the most direct expressions of transmission of information. In translation process, adhering to its original cultural characteristics and forms of expression is particularly important. This paper aims to explore the translation strategies of subtitles in the film and television drama under the guidance of the theory of translation. The film is the most contemporary cultural carrier and its manifestations, artistic language and cultural heritage are embodied in the rich characteristics of the times, reflecting various trends of contemporary society, various sectors of society, and the most typical sense of the group form. With the growing cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, as an important means of media, Western films and television dramas pour into Chinese market, and become an indispensable part of popular culture; film translation also came into being. Although the relevant domestic research in quality and quantity is on the rise, but there is not a complete theoretical system. How to translate foreign films and television works has become a problem to be solved. The purpose of this paper is to define the relationship between domestication and foreignization in film subtitle translation under the guidance of contextual effects and cognitive effort.
