1.2 Significance of the study
Under the influence of the globalization and flourishing of the world economy, many types of new entertaining activities closely related to films have come out, and a large number of them have been introduced into China, which has been regarded to be very successful. Owning to the highly-developed information technology and the fast-developing communication, Chinese can appreciate and watch the original foreign films in many ways, such as Internet-circulated foreign films. However, with the increasing number of foreign films, some problems occurred during the process of introducing. Except for technical problems, language differences are the biggest obstacle. Suppose the foreign film introduced in China is still in the original language both in utterance and subtitle, how can Chinese understand and entertain it? However, if the subtitle has been translated into Chinese, which means the Chinese can easily understand the picture on the screen synchronously with the utterance. Chinese enjoy watching and understand them easily, meanwhile, they can also appreciate the original pronunciation in the film.
1.3 Framework of the paper
This paper is pided into five parts, the first part is the introduction including the background of the study, and the significance of the study. The second part is literature review; the third part is relevance theory and its application in subtitle translation. The fourth part includes strategies of subtitle translation. The last part is conclusions.
Chapter Two literature Review
2.1 Relevance theory and translation
According to relevance theory, there are many factors which can produce all kinds of implications such as content utterances, for the purpose of producing an effective understanding of the addressee. Different factors may cause different kinds of understandings. However it is unnecessary to understand all the meaning that the utterance has transferred in the occasions. we only need to use a single and normal standard to get the main understanding of the utterance. This standard is accurate enough that the addressee succeeds in making a unique and feasible understanding with it. This standard is defined as relevance. As relevance theory has strong explanation and influences for translation, it will be introduced from three perspectives: inter-lingual interpretive use, cross-cultural communicative activity, channels to make intentions and expectations meet. Sperber and Wilson also point out that communication is an ostensive-inferential process, which is closely related to informative intention and communicative intention. Ostension and inference are the two components of communication. During the ostensive-inferential process of relevance theory, addressees ought to express his informative intention as well as communicative intention to the hearer, for the purpose of providing necessary corespondents for inference. On the contrary, addressees ought to infer the inner meaning based on the ostensive behavior of the speaker and try to find out the relevance accordingly. According to He Ziran, people can succeed in finding the most appropriate context in the process of inference, and also find the optimal relevance and understand the natural language. First and forecast, communication is to make everyone in the conversation understood, mutual manifestations are needed, and in the next place, communication is a cognitive process, which is the reason why both sides can cooperate with each other effectively. The relevance theory is influenced by two factors, which are closely related and interacting with each other, one of which is contextual effect, and another is processing efforts.
