Growth via Growth: Analysis on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Abstract:Mark Twain is one of the best-known American writers in the 19th century and he is called the father of American literature by William Faulkner. Most of his works criticize the darkness of the society and the ugliness of human nature. He expresses his concern for the common people. His writing is characterized by humor and satire. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as a masterpiece of Mark Twain, tells the story of Huck fleeing to the Mississippi River to pursue freedom. During his journey, he meets a runaway slave, Jim, and then they experience a series of adventures. The novel praises the kindness and cleverness of Huck and satirizes the ignorant social system at that time. This article tries to interpret the teenagers’ confusion in the process of growing up by discussing the specific manifestations of Huck’s conflicts.

This article describes Huck’s conflicts from three aspects. The first chapter introduces the conflicts between Huck and his family. He is not accustomed to the education from Widow Douglas. During his journey with Jim, he reveals his inner self-conflicts by showing his varying attitudes towards Jim in the second chapter. The third chapter introduces Huck’s conflicts from the society. And through these conflicts, Huck finally understands what he really wants. He cannot adapt to the kinds of social system at that time. As a result, he decides to escape the so-called civilized world.

Huck is a teenager and his growth is defined as a growth in adolescence period. Huck’s life experience is very representative which can be interpreted as other adolescents’ growth. It is vital to discuss the initiation theme in this novel which is the best epitome of all adolescents’ experience.
