Translation of Chinese Cuisine Names in A Dream of Red Mansions from the Perspective of Dietary Culture


Abstract:The Chinese food culture is extensive and profound. As a window of Chinese food culture, the English translation of cuisine names has attracted more and more attention of the world. The translation of cuisine names not only drives China’s catering move toward internationalization, but also promotes the spread of Chinese culture. A Dream of Red Mansions is a cultural treasure in the history of Chinese literature, which contains rich Chinese traditional dietary culture. There are two famous translations of A Dream of Red Mansions: the one is A Dream of Red Mansions from Yang Xianyi and his wife Gladys Yang and the other is The Story of the Stone translated by David Hawkes and his son-in-law John Minford, which are the objectives of the study. 摘要:中国饮食文化博大精深,作为中国饮食文化的窗口,菜肴名称的英译越来越受到世人的关注。菜名的英译有着多方面的意义,它不仅有利于中国的餐饮走向国际化,还推动了中国文化的传播。《红楼梦》是中国文学史上的文化瑰宝,它蕴含了中国丰富的传统饮食文化。红楼梦有两个享誉盛名的译本:杨宪益、戴乃迭夫妇翻译的 A Dream of Red Mansions 以及霍克斯和闵福德翻译的The Story of the Stone。本文尝试以红楼梦中的饮食为切入点,以文化翻译理论为指导,对比研究这两个译本对红楼梦中的菜名翻译策略,研究证明,不改变文本原意和保留菜名中的文化元素是翻译菜名时的首要注意点,因此归化和异化并存的翻译方法是首选。本文旨在弥补现有研究的不足,对未来的研究起到一定的指导意义。

1.1 Background of the Research

The integral pattern of world tends to be the combination of economic globalization and cultural persity. The communication and cooperation of polity, economy and culture between different countries is becoming more and more frequent. However, the exchanges and cooperation under a different language and culture background between people may not like being in the same cultural context --language and cultural differences will lead to the communication barriers. With the Chinese dietary becoming a part of global economic activities, it is necessary to let western audiences get better understanding and acquaintance to basic information and cultural connotations which cuisine names convey when they enjoy the Chinese cuisine .

Cross-culture is bound to involve the cultural gap, and translation is the bridge on this gap. Appropriate translation can help people from other nations gain a better and further understanding of China, accelerate the pace of building a harmonious world with common economic development and coexistence of multiple cultures, promote the prosperity of the global economy and benefit the people all over the world.
