A Study on the Spiritual Growth in Salinger’s Franny and Zooey英语论文分析塞林格的《弗兰妮与祖伊》中的精神成长
Abstract:The task I am trying to fulfill in this paper is to prove that Franny and Zooey is a novel of initiation. The approach I adopt for the purpose is firstly to present my own definition of growth after having carefully studied a number of novels of initiation at home and abroad, and then to check out whether this definition can be strictly applied to Franny and Zooey and then to analyze the stages of growth in this novel. The thesis is pided into five chapters. Chapter One contains a brief introduction of the author J.D. Salinger and the novel Franny and Zooey. Besides, research purpose and literature review have been included in this chapter as well. From Chapters Three to Five, the paper presents a detailed discussion of the three-stage growth of the protagonist Franny in the novel, namely, the encounter with the phony world, the struggle against the phony world and at last the resolution of the crisis, reaching an epiphany. The Conclusion part comes as the final chapter, giving a summary of the growth process and demonstrating the research result that Franny and Zooey indeed is a typical novel of initiation.

1. Introduction
J.D. Salinger is an American writer, whose novel The Catcher in the Rye wins huge acclaim and numerous admirers, especially among the post-World War II generation of college students. His published works also includes short stories that have appeared in magazines and newspapers, such as the The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and The New Yorker. Salinger grew up in New York City, attending public schools and a military academy. After short periods at New York University and Columbia University, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to writing, and his stories began to appear in periodicals in the year of 1940. After Salinger’s return from service in the U.S. Army, his name and writing style became increasingly connected with The New Yorker magazine, which published almost all of his later stories. Nine Stories, a selection of Salinger’s short stories, increased his fame. Many of his published pieces feature the siblings of the fictional Glass family, starting with Seymour’s appearance in A Perfect Day for Bananafish. In works such as Franny and Zooey and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction, the introspective Glass children, influenced by their eldest brother and his death, navigate questions about spirituality and enlightenment. The reclusive habits of Salinger in his later years made his personal life quite under speculation among the public, and his limited amount of literary creation was also a subject of controversy among many critics.
