Abstract:As the film industry nowadays develops at an unprecedented speed, more and more English films flow into the Chinese market. Therefore, much attention has been paid to the quality of English film subtitles translation. The subtitle translation not only helps the audience understand the content of the original English movies, but also embodies the differences between Chinese and western culture. Moreover, it is a kind of cross-cultural communication. Under the guidance of relevance theory, and from the ostensive-inferential perspective, this paper explores the application of relevance theory to English film subtitles translation strategy. The purpose of this thesis is to integrate the theory and practice, perfect the subtitle translation method and finally improve the quality of English film subtitle translation.  

This thesis includes five chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the background knowledge and the research status of English film subtitle translation at home and abroad, in addition to the content, meaning and purpose of this thesis. The second chapter analyzes the definition, classification, features and constraints of film subtitle translation. The third chapter expounds the origin and development of relevance theory, and summarizes the main concepts of relevance theory. And then, from this theory perspective, the thesis reflects that the relevance theory can be effectively applied to the translation of movie subtitles. The fourth chapter sums up six kinds of translation strategies of effective practical significance from a number of English film subtitle translation, after analyzing the representative conversations. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. The application of relevance theory to English film subtitle translation is strongly explanatory with the help of understanding of Chinese and western cultural differences. It provides a new angle of view with the reasonable theory to guide the English film subtitle translation.

摘要 :随着电影行业的迅速发展，越来越多的英语电影涌入中国市场，英语电影的字幕翻译质量也因此备受关注。字幕翻译不仅仅可以帮助观众理解原版英语电影的内容，同时也体现了中西文化的差异，是一种跨文化交流。本论文在关联理论的指导下，从这一明示-推理的理论视角出发，探讨将关联理论运用于英语电影字幕翻译的策略中，使理论与实践结合，完善字幕翻译的方法，以此提高英语电影字幕的翻译质量。

本论文共包括五个章节。第一章主要介绍了英语电影字幕翻译的背景知识与国内外研究状况，以及本论文所研究的内容、意义与目的。第二章进一步分析了电影字幕翻译的定义、分类、特点以及受到的各种限制因素和原因。第三章阐述了关联理论的起源与发展，并总结出了关联理论的主要概念意义。然后以该理论视角出发，反映出关联理论能够有效应用于电影字幕的翻译。第四章以多部英语电影的字幕翻译为例，在欣赏电影艺术的同时，选取具有代表性的选段，分别对其进行分析，归纳出六种可行有效、具有实际意义的翻译策略。第五章总结了全文，将关联理论运用到英语电影字幕翻译极具解释力，了解中西方文化差异，为字幕翻译提供新的视角，用合理的理论指导英语电影字幕翻译。
