On Reproduction of the Artistic Ideorealm in Lin Yu-tang’s English Version of Su Shi’s Ci-Poetry
Abstract:Artistic ideorealm is an important category in Chinese aesthetics and is at the core of poetry translation. For Chinese classical poetry, artistic ideorealm is its soul. Therefore, the most important task in translating Chinese classical poetry is the reproduction or reconstruction of artistic ideorealm. This paper takes Mr.Lin Yutang’s English version of Su Shi’s Ci-Poetry as the basis, to explore his translation strategies in reproducing the artistic ideorealm. Through the research and analysis, it can be found that there are several elements in reproducing the artistic ideorealm, such as rhyme scheme, choice of words and figures of speech. In addition, Mr. Lin Yutang’s translation practice in Su Shi’s Ci-Poetry could give us some enlightenment, such as using the domestication and foreignization strategies in translation, as well as combining the actual context and conditions, so as to reproducing the ideorealm in the original poetry. It is expected that this paper could deepen the research on English translation of poetry and provide some suggestions and references for the poetry translators.

1 Introduction
This part gives a brief introduction to Lin Yutang and his status in the field of translation, then explains the meaning of artistic ideorealm, and its importance in poems.
1.1Status of Lin Yutang in the Field of Translation
Lin Yutang’s achievements in translation can also be described as the achievements of his stay in the United States during the peak of his middle age. From My Country and My People in 1935 to Fleeing to Liberty City in 1964 and Chinese Painting Theory in 1967, a total of 32 works and translations were written in English, which include discourse, prose, poetry, fiction, and biography. From a macro perspective, Lin Yutang himself symbolized “translation” during this period overseas. Lin Yutang’s translation is not only a textual translation, but it conveys the Chinese people’s emotions, thoughts, and life to the Western readers, so that they can understand and appreciate the persity of Chinese culture. Mr. Lin Yutang’s contribution to China’s translation industry lies first in his inheritance and development of traditional Chinese translation theories. His understanding and innovation of translation standards laid a foundation for his translation theory, and the construction of his aesthetic system of translation has a significant impact on the development of Chinese translation aesthetics. Lin Yutang’s translation theory involved almost all issues of translation studies at that time in the academic world. In the article “On Translation”, Lin Yutang conducted in-depth analysis and argumentation on major issues in translation studies such as translation standards, translation aesthetics, and translator's status, and made instructive conclusions. However, Lin Yutang’s greatest contribution to Chinese translatology is that he founded the “vivid and expressive” translation aesthetics theory. Translator and Professor Wang Bingqin pointed out in the book The History of Chinese Translation Thoughts of the Century that Lin Yutang’s translation aesthetics is one of the ten major theories of traditional Chinese translation thoughts (2006). Lin Yutang’s views on many translation issues are forward-looking and still have positive and important guiding significance for today’s translation studies. Another important contribution of Lin Yutang to Chinese translation studies is that he has left many translation works for the world that are worthy of translation studies. These translation works, especially translated works that introduce traditional Chinese culture to the West and have won great success, are examples of Lin Yutang’s practice of his translation view and the pursuit of the highest realm of translation.
