On Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Skopos Theory—A Case Study on The Adventure of English
1 Introduction
As the accelerating paces of globalization and internationalization, the communication and integration of different cultures are reinforced. Globalization, as one of the most outstanding features of modernization, has put prominent influence on the area of economy as well as that of culture. The distance between people will be shortened geographically. Language practice, especially those related to translation are gaining growing importance in last decades. This phenomenon can be found in mass media and daily life and also other areas where people work and interact more closely and frequently. With the rapid development of multiple media, modern people consciously or unconsciously, are surrounded with millions of pieces of audio and video information since CD, VCD and DVD were invented and then internet appeared. Various films and TV series and other short video clips, as a significant form of mass media entertainments, have become an essential part of our daily life. Among them, audiovisual products from foreign countries, particularly English-speaking countries have raised people’s interests greatly in that they enable people to have an extended vision of the world, absorb strong artistic glamour and rich cultural elements. However, language gaps still exist in this information communication. Take Europe for an example. The European continent is pided into nine linguistic regions with some thirty different languages. It is impossible for people to have a command of so many languages. Since the majority of people do not possess the ability to appreciate foreign films and TV plays in the original language, they have to get assistance from various forms of language transfer.
In order to have access to the foreign media plays, the amateurish translators start to work together. In the subtitle translation groups, which is usually made up of those people who learn English very well and have a good command of it, including those students who study abroad or whose major is English and also who are interested in English translation maybe. These groups provide and update these movie and video materials and translate all the subtitles for free. We appreciate their efforts on subtitle translation, meanwhile the quality of the translation were different. It is quite easy to know that there are so many different things between two countries. The subtitle translation should be short and direct for people to look and understand.
