In 1845, the Bronte sisters were all living back home in Haworth, a small village in the west of Yorkshire, England. The sisters grew up and wrote together, but each of them has distinct personality and style. Arguing, marching around the table in the Parsonage night after night, they created three of the greatest novels in British history. Emily drew on the supernatural for her dark family saga, Wuthering Heights. Charlotte had a burning ambition beneath the shy appearance. Anne is quieter than Charlotte and less weird than Emily, for many people, she’s like a forgotten Bronte. Ann love to write real people, her first book Agnes Grey is an unsparing look at the lot of an exploited governess.

First, they published their poetry under the pseudonym Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. However it wasn’t so successful. Then Charlotte’s first novel, the Professor, got rejected everywhere. In 1847, Charlotte Bronte published Jane Eyre. It attracted much attention and was thought to be a masterpiece. She used appealing words to express the life of a governess, who was discriminated and ignored at that time. The novel was so vivid that a female reader said that if Jane Eyre was not written by a man, then it must been written by a sexual delinquent. Unlike Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights didn’t receive much praise. People think the novel was fearful and immoral. Emily, the introversive girl was so hurt that she developed tuberculosis but refused all the treatment. Emily Bronte died in December, 1848, three months after their brother Branwell. Anne’s death, also from tuberculosis, came the following year. Charlotte lost all her siblings in only eight months. After a nine-month marriage, Charlotte died on an Easter morning with an unfinished novel, Emma.

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the Bronte sisters’ works, mostly on Charlotte and Emily’s works, combined with their experiences. Gothic elements in their works are definitely important. I will choose three main features: Gothic plot, Gothic narration and Gothic characterization. Many researches talk about the Bronte sisters separately, but I believe there’s a connection between them. I would try to find out the connection among Bronte sisters’ novels, to find their inner charm and connotation.
