1.1 William Faulkner and The Sound and the Fury

William Faulkner is one of the most influential writers in 20th century. His novels are famous for his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, the background of most of his stories. It is based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where Faulkner spends most of his life.

Born in New Albany, Mississippi, William Faulkner lives and grows up in the Southern U.S.. He is greatly familiar with the history of his family and the region where he lives, so the southern culture and people always are the topics of his works. After moving to Oxford, Mississippi, his family settles down, and Faulkner lives here until he dies. It is believed that Faulkner’s family is the source of his artistic imagination, because his family has many good story tellers, including his mother Maud, his grandmother Lelia Butler, and the black maid Caroline who influences Faulkner a lot .

In 1925, Faulkner wrote his first novel, Soldier’s Pay, which was influenced by another famous American writer, Sherwood Anderson, Faulkner’s good friend. After several years’ writing, Faulkner started to set the Yoknapatawpha County as the background of his novels. Flags in the Dust is the first novel set in the Yoknapatawpha County, which was a reflection of traditions and history of the south and Faulkner’s childhood. In 1928, the most important works of Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury, was created after his 31st birthday. In 1930s, Faulkner continued to work and produces many great masterpieces such as As I Lay Dying (1930) and Light in August (1932) and Absalom, Absalom! (1936). Actually, Faulkner was unknown to public until he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949. In addition, he also received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction because of A Fable (1954) and his last novel The Reivers (1962).
