A Contrastive Study of Chinese Chivalrous Culture and British Knight Culture
Abstract:The legendary Swordsman, a martial arts fiction written by Jin Yong, recounts tales of Chinese swordsmen revolved around the Jianghu. Le Morte D’Arthur, an epic story by Sir Thomas Malory, illustrates the life of the knightly class in medieval Britain. Abounding with adventures, romances and power struggles, the two works sing praises of heroism and spirit of martialism and respectively reflect the chivalrous culture in China and knight culture in Britain. While similar in themes, the Chinese chivalry culture and the British knight culture differ in class basis. Basically, the British knight culture belongs to aristocratic culture, while the Chinese chivalry culture belongs to the civilian culture. Set in varied historical backgrounds, the two cultures demonstrate different behavioral patterns.
This thesis, initiated by my personal passion towards Chinese chivalry and English Knighthood, probes into a contrastive analysis of the Chinese chivalrous culture and British knight culture. The entire essay can be pided into three parts, a study of the historical backgrounds that generated the spirits, the behavioral patterns and the cultural influence. Through the approach of contrasting and making detailed textual analysis, the thesis comes to a conclusion that both cultures advocate the use of force and justice. However, due to different cultural backgrounds and social conditions, the influence on their respective societies is also different. In short, fundamentally speaking, the British Knight culture belongs to aristocratic culture, while Chinese Chivalry culture is common people’s culture. There may be more similarities and differences between the two, and they need to be further explored by scholars. With the exchange and integration of various ethnic cultures, the two will also influence and blend each other.
