Pip’s strong thirst for knowledge is reflected from different time of his life. Firstly, the strong curiosity is shown in Pip’s childhood. Due to the premature death of his parents, Pip lived together with his sister and his brother-in-law Joe. Pip’s brother-in-law taught Pip to be a blacksmith, a blacksmith like him who could support himself. However, Pip’s sister often ridiculed Pip as an idiot, and said to the family that she was the benefactor of Pip. Therefore, Pip decided to work harder in learning skills to be a blacksmith like Joe. Secondly, the strong curiosity is shown in his youth. When Pip was invited to Miss Havisham’s home, he met Miss Havisham and Estella who had higher cultural and social status. He decided to join the literacy class to learn the knowledge so as to improve his poor conditions, for example, the menial identity, the humble position and the lack of social skills. However, just through learning, Pip could not reach his need to communicate with Estella. He realized that the higher level of learning should be required. Luckily enough, one day, Mr. Jaggars, a lawyer from London came to Pip’s home, expressing that he wanted to take pip to London and helped Pip accept the training of being a gentleman. The whole family accepted the proposal happily and Pip’s life was about to have a reversal. In London, Pip got the expenses of learning and living from the lawyer. He not only joined the gentleman training school to learn about the gentleman etiquette, but also used the hands of the property to join the social circle in London. What’s more, he aspired to Estella who came to live in London. Although Pip’s life changed, he still could not overcome his fears because of the humble origin and lowly status. However, Pip hoped to improve his literacy and change his situation through the study of a variety of cultural etiquette.
