Researchers have been reexamining the features of checked and open syllables in Nanjing Dialect. Diachronic linguistic studies imply that due to the influence of modern Standard Mandarin, the distinctive features of checked syllables in Nanjing Dialect are diminishing, including the signs of the lost of glottal stops, and the prolonged duration of checked syllables (Song, 2009; Gu, 2015).
