Applicable usage of these hedges will not violate the objective and accurate requirement of the language expressions. To some extent, it will enhance the objectivity and accuracy of the language, which makes the language expressions more appropriate and gives full play to the pragmatic functions (Zhou, Gan 50). hedges are not only widely used in Chinese journalism, but also in news English. Therefore, this paper chooses the hedges in news English as the research subject, with an aim to illustrate their functions in the journalism with some examples, so as to improve the application techniques of hedges of journalists and increase their quality and influence of journalism.

This paper consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction, which involves the background, the significance and layout of this paper. The second part is the basic information of hedges, such as its definition and classification. The third part is the justification for the existence of hedges in news English such as timeliness, conciseness, validity and unavoidable inaccuracy of news English. The fourth part analyzes in detail the functions of hedges in news English. The last part is the conclusion of this paper.
