The Analysis of Existentialism in The Outsider

Abstract:The Outsider is a novel of modernism and it is also Albert Camus’ s first book published in 1942. It represents readers a story in which an indifferent person who abandons secular ethics runs with scissors and try to seek a way out, while finally he chose to revolt the world by means of ignoring.

The protagonist Meursault’s personal behavior in the writing and his dealing with people are displayed by the author in defamiliarization. He has adopted an indifferent attitude toward affection, love and friendship. Even when facing the important choice in his own life, he always shows his dispensable thought. But all these are the resistance of Meursault to absurdity and nihility. He cannot tolerate the hypocritical formalism and religious etiquette that the society is flooding with. People around abandoned him and a series things made him become an indifferent person.

In the first part of the novel, Meursault makes readers feel like he had no dispute with the world. However, after the second part of the trial conviction, he later discovered that the reaction is an alternative method of rebellion. While in the court, the transfer of topics of judges and prosecutors, all layers pressure and unsubstantiated accusations could not rescue the young people from the absurd society. It is better for him to go to death than to grovel hypocritically.

For the first time, Camus proposed the theme of “absurd” in the book The Outsider, and embodied the mapping of “absurd” situations to human nature in the real society.
