I. Introduction

Chinglish is a language with Chinese characteristic, which contains Chinese vocabulary, grammar, expression patterns and Chinese culture. Due to the impact of thinking ways and Chinese cultures, some students mechanically translate Chinese into English without changing sentence structures and paying attention to the usage of vocabularies which result in distorted English and can’t be accepted by native speakers. The spread of Chinglish is not beneficial to learn for English learners. Nowadays, Chinglish has become a serious problem for Chinese students, which urgently needs to overcome this problem. Though analyzing the differences between Chinese and foreign cultural background and mode of thinking, this paper aims to help English learners to avoid Chinglish, learn native English and promote intercultural exchanges.

Chapter three discusses the manifestations of Chinglish in C-E translation. Chapter four analyzes the causes of Chinglish. Chapter five offers some advice to avoid Chinglish. Chapter six draws a conclusion for the whole paper.

II. General Introduction to Chinglish

2.1 Definition of Chinglish

The word “Chinglish” has been defined by many experts. Professor Deng Yanchang supposes that Chinglish refers to the English speeches or writings showing Chinese characteristics (Deng 11). He further indicates that some sentences may be little more than word for word translation of Chinese expressions. Chinglish may be grammatically correct, but the choice of words or phrases and the manner of expressions differ from normative English usage.
