2.4 The Character of Regionalism
Different regions have perse cultures, historical backgrounds, customs and taboos. In foreign affairs, the use of English euphemism is essential for diplomats. Regionalism is regarded as the characteristics of English euphemism in the diplomatic activities. In different contexts and situations, people always endow the special meanings to some words for showing the respect to their partners. For example, “He is in the bathroom”, the Americans may be understood as “He is in the toilet”, and while the British may think “He is taking a bath”, the bathroom means “bathing” in British English, while “toilet” in American English. In a word, the regionalism makes the meaning of the English euphemism different. As a result, the language shows the regional character in foreign affairs and regionalism became an important character in English Euphemism.
